when I was doing my job as a radio disk jockey back in 1972, I had a lot of listeners who called me up just to request that I play |''|BEN|''| over the air and they would all dedicate it to me! Gosh, did I ever get sick of that song...especially when I was reminded that it's a song about a RAT!!! Oh vell, that's how the pop history of radio goeth... |

Now I just happen to think that this is one of the most amazingly beautiful songs in our culture's modern history. The lyrics touch a universal place in all of us. So what if in one instance it was being sung to commemorate an individual's love for a certain rat? I sing it to my Siamese cat, whom I initally named |''|Ben|''| in order to fit this song's lyrics. But he never responded to that name, and then one night, over a glass of vodka, he made me come to see that his name was in fact |''|Rostam|''| a famed noble Persian warrior. But I still sing the song to him, with the appropriate substitutions. More conventional humans, I assume, would be inclined to sing it to a fellow primate. Now, I take issue with the previous rater's rating concerning the vocal quality. When you listen to Michael Jackson sing this song, if you did not know it was him, you would imagine a lovely soprano female vocalist. Kind of makes you think that he'd have been better off as a castrado, avoiding puberty altogether, no? |
