The fact that musical came out during a 'time when the Civil Rights controversy came to 'bad climax' of MLK Jr.'s Assassination' and the role of Judas Iscariot was the 'only black person in the cast'; this caused a 'great uproar in the religious community as well. All the 'parental uproar' is what made it so popular with my generation! We did not focus on the 'racial bias' or whether Mary Magdalene was 'in love' with Jesus. The sarcasm in the song lyrics is what our 'rebellion' enjoyed. I still enjoy sarcastic humor, and I will be 47 tomorrow! And, yes, the music matched the then current beat. I was actually punished for 'buying the soundtrack' and I didn't tell Daddy about the 'spare' copy; I just got me some headphones. Of course, I've never told my own children, who are both adults now, about that little 'slip of rebellion' that was the norm, even back then. |

Another television musical about Jesus was Godspell. a modernization of the great classic, King of Kings. Still the religious community could not get past the 'spell' ing the title of Godspell. They just don't seem to realize how that such criticisms only drive away their young people. That's why there is so much confusion among the youths; because they none of want to go to Hell; and they do know that Jesus Christ can save them from Hell and take them to Heaven. To criticize the search of our young; especially before we've really analized the source, is not only a big 'turn-off' to children, but is morally wrong, in that we shut them out in doing so. That is why I learned that it better to view things from ALL angles, because I am not GOD, just a Knowing Woman. |
